Gorilla Trekking
This is the most popular hiking activity in the Virunga Mountains. The experience involves trekking through the forests to observe and interact with habituated mountain gorilla groups and permits are usually required, and it’s recommended to book in advance. In Uganda, the activity takes place in Mgahinga gorilla national park which protects one gorilla habituated family, in Rwanda, it takes place in Volcanoes national park which protects 10 habituated gorilla families and then Virunga national park in DR Congo.
Note: In Uganda, gorilla permits are at US$700, Rwanda at US$1500 and then US$400 in DR Congo.
Golden Monkey Trekking:
Alongside gorillas, the Virunga Mountains are also home to golden monkeys that are seen during golden monkey tracking experience. The experience involves hiking through the Virunga parks like Mgahinga gorilla national park of Uganda and Volcanoes national park of Rwanda in search of the shy and cute apes. Once the species are found, hikers are allowed to spend some good time in their presence as they take pictures and videos for memorable experiences.
Bird Watching:
For bird enthusiasts, Virunga mountains are among the best destinations to opt for. This activity involves some bit of hiking during the search of the birds and The Virunga Mountains are a haven for birdwatchers. The area is home to a diverse range of bird species, some of which are endemic to the region.
